\u00abWe\u00a0will reduce the cost of\u00a0annual treatment course for hepatitis\u00a0C from USD 20,000 to\u00a0USD 2,000\u00bb<\/em>, said Dmitry Sherembey, Head of\u00a0Ukrainian Community Advisory Board<\/strong>. \u00abEvery day we\u00a0are approached by\u00a0patients who are unable to\u00a0find the money to\u00a0pay for their treatment, even if\u00a0they try to\u00a0sell their apartments, leaving their families in\u00a0the street. We\u00a0therefore commit ourselves to\u00a0achieve lower prices for the drugs, believing that if\u00a0this could be\u00a0achieved in\u00a0a\u00a0country like Egypt, then we\u00a0can do\u00a0the same in\u00a0Ukraine\u00bb.<\/em><\/p>\n At\u00a0the roundtable attended by\u00a0NGOs, Ministry of\u00a0Health officials, Members of\u00a0Parliament, pharmaceutical companies and international experts from Egypt and France, the patients put forth a\u00a0proposition to\u00a0reduce the cost of\u00a0hepatitis\u00a0C treatment in\u00a0Ukraine by\u00a0letting biosimilar products be\u00a0present in\u00a0the domestic market, just like it\u00a0had been done in\u00a0Egypt.<\/p>\n It\u00a0should be\u00a0noted that the government of\u00a0Egypt, where 13\u00a0million people are infected with the disease, has managed to\u00a0control the country\u2019s hepatitis C\u00a0epidemic. Having reached an\u00a0agreement with a\u00a0local pharmaceutical company on\u00a0domestic manufacturing of\u00a0the medicine, the Egyptian government managed to\u00a0reduce the treatment cost from USD 20,000 to\u00a0USD 2,ooo, which enabled it\u00a0to\u00a0procure many more treatment courses. Such cooperation between the government and pharmaceutical companies allowed enrolling a\u00a0huge number of\u00a0patients on\u00a0the treatment program and thus containing the spread of\u00a0the epidemic.<\/p>\n We\u00a0would like to\u00a0remind you that the Government of\u00a0Ukraine, where according to\u00a0the World Health Organization almost 3.5 million people are currently living with hepatitis, has allocated UAH 0.000 to\u00a0treat the patients in\u00a02013.<\/p>\n \u00abWe\u00a0hope that this year for the first time in\u00a0Ukraine\u2019s history the state budget will allocate funds for the treatment of\u00a0Ukrainians [living with viral hepatitis]. We\u00a0are actively working to\u00a0lower the cost of\u00a0the drugs by\u00a0localizing their manufacturing. Once it\u00a0becomes clear, what budget appropriations have been approved and how many treatment courses we\u00a0need to\u00a0procure, we\u00a0can start discussing some manyfold price reductions\u00bb<\/em>, said Dmitry Pidturkin, Advisor to\u00a0Minister of\u00a0Health of\u00a0Ukraine.<\/strong><\/p>\n It\u2019s noteworthy that thanks to\u00a0some advocacy efforts by\u00a0patient and community groups, on\u00a0December\u00a028, 2012 the President of\u00a0Ukraine signed the Order \u00abOn\u00a0certain matters related to\u00a0preventing the spread of\u00a0TB, HIV\/AIDS and viral hepatitis epidemics\u00bb (#1-1\/3526), instructing the Cabinet of\u00a0Ministers of\u00a0Ukraine to\u00a0make amendments to\u00a0the 2013 State Budget Law and allocate funds needed to\u00a0treat hepatitis C\u00a0patients.
