Patients of Ukraine together with its partners continue to work on developing the rehabilitation system in Ukraine. We support the development of a national network of healthcare facilities that provide rehabilitation services. Our goal is high-quality and affordable rehabilitation for military and civilians.

As part of the project “Strengthening the capacity to provide physical rehabilitation services in Ukraine”, together with our partners, the School of Rehabilitation Medicine of the Ukrainian Catholic University and the All-Ukrainian Association of Physical Therapists, we conducted 10 intensive trainings for specialists from multidisciplinary rehabilitation teams from 5 medical institutions:
- Regional Children’s Clinical Hospital of Sumy Regional Council
- Municipal Enterprise “Myrhorod Intensive Care Hospital” of Myrhorod City Council
- Okhtyrka Central District Hospital, a municipal enterprise of the Okhtyrka City Council
- Lozovskoye Territorial Medical Association of Lozovskoye City Council
- Municipal Clinical Hospital No. 16 of the Dnipropetrovs’k City Council

70 rehabilitation specialists were trained on the topic of “Interdisciplinary approach to providing rehabilitation services”. Participants learned about the regulatory framework of the rehabilitation team, the approach to rehabilitation of patients after stroke and traumatic brain injury, and clinical examination tools in neurorehabilitation.
Another 69 specialists attended the training on Basic Principles of Physical Therapy for Injuries and Pathologies of the Musculoskeletal System. The specialists familiarized themselves with the algorithm of examination of such patients, therapeutic interventions to reduce the degree of pain, reviewed clinical cases, etc.

Also, 5 healthcare facilities were equipped with evidence-based rehabilitation equipment. In particular, physical therapy equipment, suspended rehabilitation systems, and ergotherapy supplies worth about UAH 10.5 million were purchased.
The project assessed the needs for repair work in the rehabilitation departments of medical institutions and prepared a descriptive and technical report.

Another priority of our work is the development of rehabilitation policy in Ukraine. To this end, the project has already analyzed the problems of rehabilitation in pediatrics and developed proposals for the development of children’s rehabilitation. The team is working to improve the professional education of specialists and development of clinical guidelines for rehabilitation care for children and adults.
The development of the rehabilitation system and improvement of rehabilitation policies is a component of the initiative “Rehabilitation of War Trauma in Ukraine”, which has been implemented by the Charitable Foundation “Patients of Ukraine” since June 2022 with the support of Switzerland, the European Union, Nova Ukraine and other donors, and in partnership with Protez Hub, the All-Ukrainian Association of Physical Therapists, the Ukrainian Society of Occupational Therapists, the Ukrainian Society for Speech and Language Therapy. All the activities of the initiative are supported by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine, the National Health Service of Ukraine, the Ministry of Social Policy of Ukraine, the Office of the President of Ukraine and the Advisor to the Presidential Commissioner for Accessibility.
