The first meeting of Ukrainian Community Advisory Board (UCAB) and the representatives of pharmaceutical company took place on April, 19-21. The first company, who met the community, was Abbott Laboratories Ltd. «The main theme of the meeting was the training for UCAB members on clinical trials, conducted by the leading specialist in Europe — Svilen Konov — told Dmytro Sherembey, the Head of UCAB. — Nowadays Ukraine occupies one of the last places in the list of European countries conducting clinical trials. And this factor considerably influences the quality of treatment for our patients.»
According to the information presented, about 230 clinical trials are approved in Ukraine every year, while 4 949 are conducted in the United States, 1020 in Germany, 944 in Canada, 747 in France and 703 in Great Britain. Psychiatry, neurology and oncology are the main areas, where clinical trials are conducted in Ukraine. And only 5 clinical trials were conducted in the area of HIV/AIDS — the disease, which takes lives of 8 Ukrainians every day. It’s worth to mention, that the meeting resulted into the agreement to include UCAB representatives into Central Commission on Ethics under the Ministry of Health of Ukraine. This Comission is an independent scientific body ensuring patients’ rights, safety and well-being. Abbott Laboratories Ltd. delivered information on clinical trails in the world, presented their social projects and initiated cooperation with UCAB in this area.
